Ek het vir een jaar kuns geneem as vak by Monument Hoërskool. Toe verhuis my ouers na Bloemfontein.

Intussen skilder ek in my vrye tyd.

Hierna volg The Citizen waar ek as advertensiekunstenaar werk.

As gevolg van my ondervinding kry ek ‘n pos by Unisa as grafiese kunstenaar. Hier kon ek my kreatiwiteit meer uitleef.

Irene Design Studio ontstaan in 1996.

I was born in Johannesburg on April 24, 1954. My parents moved to Krugersdorp when I was only one. The 13 years we lived there, were the happiest a child could wish for. We were a group of wild kids who ran around and played where we wanted, without being afraid of anything or anyone. Here I already started drawing in walls and glasses – and in the sand. I had art as subject for one year at Monument High School. Then my parents moved to Bloemfontein. A few lean years, as far is art was concerned, followed but when I landed in Port Elizabeth in standard nine, I could take art as again. It was heavenly! An F symbol for maths did not bother me at all. Art was the only thing that mattered!

After matric a studied Fine Arts at the then Technicon, now known as the Nelson Mandela Metroplitan Univertsity. A few years of pure joy! My subjects were painting and drawing of figure studies, landscapes and still lifes. I also did graphic art, illustrations, sculpture and pottery. I had the good fortune to be able to study under well-known artists such as Trevor Melville, Joan Wright, Alexander Podlashuc, Hunter Nesbit, Hillary Graham and Neil Rodgers.

In 1977 I joined the Defence Force. What a contrast! Here I was forced to do graphic design. I learned to become a fully-fledged graphic designer at the expense of the army! My design activities included technical drawing, slide shows, video programmes and movie scripts. In the meanwhile I painted in my spare time.

After the stint in the army, I worked as advertising artist at The Citizin. Thanks to the information scandal, I was transferred to Hoofstad and Oggendblad, again as advertising artist but with more responsibilities.

Due to my experience I got a post at Unisa as graphic artist. Here I could express my creativity more. The department for educational technology makes video programmes, slide show series and sound recordings for the various courses offered by Unisa. Everything is aimed at distance learning. I also did illustrations for thesis and layout of internal publications. I held an exhibition of my paintings at a function of the association of lecturers.

Then followed Tuks, where I did approximately the same type of work, but in a more senior position.

I was offered a post at the Bureau of Information and did layout of publications such as Panorama, SA Today, Yearbook of South Africa and the publication at the inauguration of Pres. De Klerk.

I then accepted a post at Eskom’s training college, which later became known as the Conference Centre. I learned how to do computer aided technical drawings for training material and did graphic design for various functions. The designs included wine labels, menus and invitations. I also made backdrops for large functions, again bringing me closer to painting

I decided to start my own business with the aim of spending more time painting. Irene Design Studio was created in 1996.

The services offered by Irene design Studio include: Layout of publications, corporate identity, advertising material, signage, branding and geological maps. Corporate identity includes the design of a logo, business cards, letterheads and e-mail signatures. I also create paintings and murals on assignment.

To stay in touch with the art world, I attend a weekly class at Alain Nortjé, a well-known South African painter. Since I started painting again 5 years ago, I have held solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions.
