Karien loves life. Her home and heart is open to friends and those who need her. She likes to spoil visitors and considers making food to be a creative process and an enjoyable way to celebrate the good that life offers.

"Karien is active - she is never bored and listless," says a friend. "There is something in her that will forever stay a child and like a wild girl with a yellow mane she scurries around all day."

Painting is her passion and something she only started practicing later in her life. Her three children were already quite grown up when she studied creative arts at UNISA. For her, painting is more than just drawing pretty pictures. It requires self-discipline and the courage to bare your soul. The shadows in the life of a painter are also looking for expression and recognition on the canvas.

"I want to make art at which my grandchildren can sit and eat porridge'. These words by Paul Cezanne are a daily inspiration to Karien Boonzaaier. She wants to convey a message of life and light - something that will make the observer feel good. Her faith is important to her. The Greek word 'Parakletos' - meaning 'the Holy Ghost as my helper, guide, comforter and advocate' - always appears below her name in her paintings.

Karien and her husband love travelling and her enamourment with European architecture lead her to the theme of walls, doors and roads. "For me, a door is a metaphor for choice. Every day we have to make so many choices (open or close doors). One CHOOSES to be generous, kind-hearted, cheerful, friendly, considerate or goal oriented. A certain choice steers our life onto a certain road of life," she says.

Karien's work is rich in colour and texture. The texture of the walls and doors gives it a weathered and old appearance and feel. In her landscapes of the Free State and still-life paintings of fruit the expressive, colourful brush strokes create a tangible atmosphere.
